The Transformation
Once upon a time a princess
told the birds that were singing round her
what she would do when the prince found her.
I’ll kick that son-of-a-witch’s butt
till he learns to squat and leap on command,
and looks liberated and appreciates what
a princess these days needs in a man.
She thereupon kicked a frog into the water
and waited for her prince to emerge;
but he didn’t and she began to feel slimy,
and smaller and smaller, and all green,
Until at last she began thinking
live flies food that was fit for a queen.
Then she dove and pursued the frog,
and their first born was a pollywog.
