Discarding The Past Present

We reckon the light from a distant star

tells nothing about its existence now;

but so it is with ourselves in the glass.

To reflect on this and what we are

may shape us as much as our past.

We have to believe in more than a sense

of outdated sight to have a present

that is new and free,  however gradual.

Are we more than what we saw?

Just as a lizard escapes his skin

to assume a new one beneath,

so may we require sight

that is not on the glass but within.
