Emergence

At first I hear the deer as leaves,

underfoot on the ground she treads;

then, as the leaves on bushes move,

the shape of a deer emerges—

a young doe, slowly in green,

as if she were the leaves themselves,

and she is.

On the hillside above her another

emerges, the same size, perhaps a sister,

slowly leaving, standing, walking,

standing, looking

back at me, wondering, as is the first,

(if I might read their thoughts)

whether another man will emerge.
