Reflecting On A Long Marriage
I was like her dog, I suppose,
that shit on the carpet
and chewed new shoes,
barked for nothing in the middle of the night,
came cozying up unexpectedly
and rogered her leg,
was most friendly wet, soused,
slobbered on company’s lap,
didn’t come reliably when called,
disappeared for months at a time,
causing distress, undeniably,
basically, wasn’t a very great asset
unless you happened to think so
since I minded the house and didn’t bite,
responded to and afforded affection:
Chemistry.
She loved me
and I, her.
We were a team.
