Ugly And Surprising Death

She gave up the ghost in my kitchen sink:

a hummingbird, unknown in the house.

I found her in the dish rack, dead,

sprawled between two plasticized wires

intended to hold wet plates,

one wing in the cutlery container,

looking, in death, unlike herself,

a hideous big insect or small dinosaur,

stretched and contorted, damaged,

grotesque.
