Sole Selfie
I took my cell phone to shoot the sunrise
and captured a selfie instead, first.
It was coming up slow, you understand,
as it does pretty every bloody day.
We could have still been in bed.
But there we were, on the side of a mountain,
freezing my ass off, (and the guide’s),
my wife with more clothes on than anyone,
having an experience, happy as daybreak,
getting the most out of Mexican mountains.
With the fiery horizon ablaze on my screen,
by mistake, I pressed what turns things around,
and there was I in its place, not objecting,
magnificent— the only selfie I ever took.
I shot the sunrise after.
